Sidney Brower
Sidney Brower was Professor Emeritus in the Urban Studies and Planning program. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Master of City Planning degree from M.I.T. He worked as an architect in Cape Town, and subsequently in the Baltimore City Department of Planning where he was Chief of the Comprehensive Planning section and then Chief of Design Research. His publications include Design in Familiar Places (Praeger, 1988), Good Neighborhoods (Praeger 1996, paper 2000), and Neighbors and Neighborhoods (APA Planners Press, 2011 in print and e-book ). Brower is the author of numerous papers in journals, and book chapters on the subject of urban design and environment-behavior studies. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, and Environment and Behavior. His research focuses on ways in which people's attitudes and behaviors affect and respond to their physical surroundings, and on making research findings useful to planners and designers. He recently completed a year-long user survey of Patterson Park, in Baltimore. He is a weaver and a potter.
