Biography

Kelly Fleming is a professional landscape architect with master's degree in Landscape Architecture and Design Studies from Harvard University. Her experience spans more than 25 years academically and professionally covering the public and private sectors. She has worked for award‐winning firms in New York and the Baltimore‐Washington region bringing a unique perspective to the profession infusing function into form through her work and experience with the Low Impact Development Center. Kelly’s professional and academic background has given her an understanding of ecological principles that she uses to guide the design, planting, and maintenance of landscapes and their integration with the built environment.

Kelly is a U.S. Green Building Council SITES Accredited Professional (SITES AP) which demonstrates her knowledge of sustainable land design, development and management practices as well as being a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional. She employs critical thinking to various challenges in implementing green infrastructure at multiple scales to combat environmental and sustainability challenges. She has led landscape design studios in green infrastructure and community design at the University of Maryland and at the Sustainable Futures Program at the Monteverde Institute in Costa Rica as well as supporting a study abroad course in Natural Resources and Landscape Architecture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Kelly’s passion for landscape architecture stems from her love of painting and drawing combined with her love of nature and all of its processes seen and unseen. Good landscape design can promote ecosystem functions that support us by providing clean air, clean water, and increased biodiversity. Kelly seeks to integrate thoughtful design with emerging practices grounded in research and technology to support the ecosystems that support us. Her desire is to provide opportunities for all to have meaningful connections to the outdoors.
