Jason Abramowitz (B.S. Architecture ’17) had always dreamed of becoming an architect. After working many years to achieve his goal, and despite having Muscular Dystrophy, he was able to complete his bachelor’s degree, graduating in December 2017.

Jason passed away on August 18, 2019, at the age of 34—many years beyond what is expected for someone with his disability.

Jason was selected unanimously by his peers to deliver the undergraduate architecture address at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation’s commencement. In that stirring address, which you can read in full below, he noted, “My one piece of advice to everyone is that anyone can persevere in their goals and dreams, only doubt is a disability.”

“Jason was a true inspiration to students, staff and faculty members alike,” said Brian Kelly, Area Chair and Director of the Architecture Program. “I will never forget his commencement address and how he challenged us to focus on our abilities and rise above our disabilities. Jason was a courageous young man who taught us all to be thankful for our gifts. We should all celebrate his life of aspirations and achievements!”

He wanted to create architecture for those with disabilities, like himself. As noted in his obituary, he lived a full life, advocating for people with disabilities and inspiring many ambulatory people to achieve more.

You may read Jason’s commencement address below:

“Welcome faculty, family, friends, and fellow students. I am very excited about having been given this opportunity to speak tonight. First of all, it’s an honor to say a few words at this commencement. Becoming an architect has always been a dream of mine, however when I started that dream I had reservations about, about pretty much everything. Thoughts of my disability preventing me almost took over. I thought to myself, can I complete such a physically demanding program, or will I be able to keep up with my fellow classmates? For example, once I started my classes I was soon relieved of my fears. Coming to the School of Architecture I have been able to grow both socially and academically. My confidence grew so much that I was able to do a study abroad program in the Czech Republic. Meeting other students has greatly contributed to my success, I couldn’t have finished without them. I am truly grateful to my classmates for being inclusive and good friends. I also wanted to acknowledge the department’s professors and staff for their confidence in me, and providing me with their full support. My one piece of advice to everyone is that anyone can persevere in their goals and dreams, only doubt is a disability.”
