Four extraordinary young women are this year’s recipients of prestigious scholarship-internship opportunities in the Baltimore/D.C. area, through the generous support of partner firms Design Collective, David M. Schwarz Architects, Gensler and Torti Gallas. The awards recognize academic achievement and a continued dedication to the built environment through practice and study.
Jennifer Chorosevic will be spending her summer interning at Design Collective (DCI) in Baltimore, Md., after receiving the Design Collective Scholarship/Internship Award. In addition to the internship, Jennifer will receive a scholarship from DCI towards her final academic year. Located in Baltimore, Md., Design Collective is a multi-disciplinary firm specializing in architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, interior design and sustainability.
Zara Nazer has been selected for the 2016 David M. Schwarz Internship and Traveling Fellowship award. The award includes a 10-week paid internship with David M. Schwarz Architects (DMSAS) in Washington, D.C., and a travel stipend to conduct research abroad during the summer of 2016. For her research fellowship, Zara plans to study the architecture, culture and costume of Iran. She will use her research to fortify her final thesis, the restructuring of the former Iranian Embassy in Washington, D.C., into an Iranian Culture Park, providing enlightenment and understanding between the two countries. David M. Schwarz Architects is a Washington, D.C.-based design firm with an expansive portfolio of residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, athletic and master planning projects located throughout the country.
The Gensler Alumni Scholarship Fund provides a summer internship to a MAPP graduate student, as well as scholarship toward the student’s final academic year. This year’s winner is Erin Barkman, who will be interning at Gensler’s D.C. office. Gensler is a global architecture, design and planning firm that provides services in architecture, interior design, brand design, product design, planning and urban design and consulting to over 2,400 clients through 46 locations worldwide.
Sarah Abdulla has received the 2016 Jack Smith Kerxton Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will provide Sarah with financial aid as well as a 2016 summer internship with Torti Gallas and Partners, a renowned architecture firm located in Silver Spring, Md. With a hand in designing many communities throughout the U.S., Torti Gallas’ projects include traditional neighborhoods and inner city redevelopment, revitalization projects, commercial ventures and transit-oriented projects.
“The combination of significant scholarships with internships not only enriches the lives of these talented students, it also opens their minds to the possibilities of contemporary practice in some of the top firms in our region,” said Brian Kelly, Director of UMD’s Architecture Program. “Once more, the gifts provided by these generous firms provide the University of Maryland a competitive edge in recruitment of the best graduate students.”
