Professor Donald Linebaugh, director of UMD’s Historic Preservation Program and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, has been named to the governor's Consulting Committee on the National Register of Historic Places. Don joins six other appointees to serve a four-year term; as experts in the fields of preservation, history, architecture and archaeology, they review state nominations to the National Register of Historic Places before they are submitted to the National Park Service.

Don has served as director of UMD’s Historic Preservation Program since 2004. Prior to his time at Maryland, he was the Director of the Program for Archaeological Research and an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky. He is the author of several books, most recently The Saratoga Campaign: Uncovering an Embattled Landscape, which uncovers new details of the pivotal Revolutionary War battle using several decades of  historical, archaeological and geophysical research. He previously chaired the selection committee for “Endangered Maryland,” an annual list of at-risk historic properties sponsored by Preservation Maryland and Maryland Life Magazine.

“This is a wonderful achievement, and a testament to Don’s expertise and dedication to the state’s cultural heritage,” said Dr. Sonia Hirt, Dean of UMD’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

Part of the Maryland Historical Trust, the Committee on the National Register of Historic Places was formed in 1967 to implement the terms of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (P.L. 89-665). Learn more about the committee here.
