The gender gap within the design world is narrowing. Once a male-dominated profession, women are increasingly tackling leadership roles, addressing the social and economic ramifications of design and contributed to a growing and diverse urban fabric. This spring we highlight some of the talented women making waves in the design world with an exhibit and speaker series, a lecture and a corresponding symposium:

“Ms. Mod”: Women’s Contribution to Mid-Century Modernism in Maryland

Panel presentation on the work of seven extraordinary women who contributed to Mid-Century Modernism in Maryland from the mid-1930s through the 1960s. Exhibit’s opening reception follows.

The Making of an Exhibition: Early Women of Architecture in Maryland 
Thursday, March 3, 2016 | 6:30-8:00pm

Gallery tour and talk about the spring exhibit in the Kibel Gallery, which features the culmination of efforts by the Women in Architecture Committee of the American Institute of Architects, Baltimore Chapter (AIA Baltimore) to understand the history and the state of women in the profession. The exhibition showcases 12 women’s stories and their design projects from 1920s to the 1960s. Women in Architecture reception follows.

Leading Women in Architecture – A Symposium
Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9, 2016

This two-day symposium will highlight the careers of six accomplished female leaders in the profession. The participants will discuss their career paths touching on the important moments that guided them towards leadership positions in both the profession and the community. The speakers will provide insights into how they benefited from mentors and overcame obstacles along the way to assuming leadership roles, and they will discuss the challenges of maintaining a critical work-life balance while continuing their arc towards the highest levels in the design professions.
