The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation is pleased to announce the promotion of three professional track faculty within the architecture program. Julie Gabrielli, Lindsey May and Brittany Williams are recognized for their commitment and service to their students and the school, most recently leading efforts to bring architecture education online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Julie, Lindsey and Brittany are enthusiastic, engaging teachers and mentors,” said Interim Dean Donald Linebaugh. “They have generously shared their practical expertise in sustainability and resilient design to create innovative, challenging studio exercises and enrich the student experience. Their commitment to service and leadership continues to make the program one of the country’s best.”

Julie Gabrielli

Julie Gabrielli has been promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Architecture. Gabrielli is a 30-year teaching veteran at the University of Maryland, bringing her knowledge of green and sustainable design to create compelling design thinking challenges for the 600/611 level studio. She was a founding principal of LerraLogos eco architecture and has run a thriving Baltimore practice, Gabrielli Design Studio, for the past 15 years.

“Julie has enriched the discourse on architectural education and environmental issues throughout her time at Maryland,” said Architecture Program Director Brian Kelly. “She was one of the key participants in our successful 2011 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon first-place award-winning project WaterShed. She continues to bring her expertise in sustainable and resilient design to studios and seminars.”

Lindsey May

Lindsey May has been promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Architecture. She is principal at Studio Mayd, a commercial and residential architecture design studio in the heart of Washington, D.C. May brings her talent for imaginative urban design to undergraduate-level design studios at MAPP and as a frequent faculty advisor for graduate design thesis. She also serves as interim assistant director for Maryland’s Architecture Program.

“Lindsey’s work both in the classroom and behind the scenes as interim assistant director of the Architecture Program has been transformative,” says Kelly. “Most recently she spearheaded the team that took us online with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. She always sees the glass as half-full and her optimism is a source of inspiration for many.”

Brittany Williams

Brittany Williams has been promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Architecture. A 2005 (B.S. Architecture) and 2007 (M.ARCH) graduate of UMD’s Architecture Program, Williams is a two-time U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon winner, first as a student and later, as an advisor. Williams has practiced with colleague and Clinical Professor Amy Gardner as part of Gardner Architects LLC since 2013. She brings her passion for environmentally-focused design to undergraduate and graduate studio and as a regular thesis advisor.

“Brittany is a “can-do” person and natural leader,” says Kelly. “Her leadership in the ARCH 402 and 403 studios provides students with rigorous preparation for graduate school and professional practice. Her ability to integrate complex issues throughout these studios makes her a tremendous asset to the school.”
