ARCH Students Place at ACSA Steel Design Competition

A team of University of Maryland architecture students has won honorable mention in the Open category of the ACSA Steel Student Design Competition. The project, entitled “A Beacon for Baltimore,” was selected from a pool of 500 entries for innovative use of steel in design. The winning UMD team members are Marissa Levash, Erica Aronson and Evan Schroeder.

Administered by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the Steel Competition challenges students, working individually or in teams, to explore a variety of design issues relating to the use of steel in design and construction. Steel must be used as the primary structural material and the design must contain at least one space that requires a long-span steel structure, with special emphasis placed on innovation in steel design. The student team developed their entry as their ARCH 600/611 Integrated Design Studio project, under the guidance of Professor Madlen Simon. In addition to Simon, the team benefited from the help of Professors Peter Noonan, Garth Rockcastle, Carl Bovill and Powell Draper throughout the semester.

The team’s project, as well as other winning entries from the competition, will be on view at the104th ACSA Annual Meeting in Seattle, Wa., (March 17-19, 2016) and the American Institute of Architects Annual Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., (May 19-21, 2016).
