Stack Alley, created by Students are Joseph Edwards and Marcelino Defngin, won AIA Maryland's graduate design award, beginning design.

Six University of Maryland studio projects were recognized for sustainable, community-centered design at this year’s AIA Maryland Excellence in Design Awards, sweeping each category at both the undergraduate and graduate level for the second year in a row. A jury of established practitioners, industry leaders and educators from AIA South Carolina recognized 12 architecture students and recent graduates for their thoughtful and innovative work with student winner and citation awards. UMD alumni also had an outstanding showing, earning professional accolades in the jury citation, merit and honor categories. Winners were celebrated at a ceremony in Baltimore on Thursday, September 29, 2022.

“We are thrilled to see the creativity and thoughtful vision of our students celebrated by the AIA,” said Architecture Director Mohammad Gharipour. “The projects recognized this year offer a window into the sustainably-minded, community-driven design education imprinted on every student, and with every project.”

This annual awards program provides member architects an avenue for peer recognition and honors the architects, clients and consultants who work together to improve Maryland’s built environment. UMD’s six winning projects were selected from student entries across the region and featured engaging schemes for timber-framed urban housing, public facilities for Maryland’s Assateague State Park and a resilient coastal enclave in Atlantic City. Submitted as a package of drawings and a brief narrative, the projects must be able to speak for themselves and convey a clear and compelling approach to the design objective or challenge. Beyond beautiful design, the students’ attention to community impact and sustainability—two metrics integral to this year’s awards program—won accolades with the jury.

“The entries at the graduate and undergraduate level showed a notably sensitive approach, in many cases well-resolved and sophisticated in clarity and restraint,” said Jury Chair Jennifer Charzewski, AIA.
