About the Lecture
What can contentious monuments teach us about reconciling the past? Although often seen as fixed and unchanging- monuments can become powerful spaces for reflection, healing, and growth. In the context of current conversations about education and public history, this talk will examine the complex ways monuments have both preserved and distorted our collective memory. This talk will also explore the legacies of trauma embedded in our monuments and discuss how, with intentional community engagement and care, these public markers can be transformed into living memorials that foster dialogue, understanding, and healing.
