24-Hour Exhibition: One and Three United States

One and Three United States is an expanded semiotic triangle designed to reframe the entire United States as readymade. Repurposing the drier seminal conceptualism of Joseph Kosuth as a strategy with which to build an aesthetic object beyond the limits of direct sense perception, One and Three United States is only meaningfully experienced when both the viewer and the work’s physical wall mounted components are located within the United States. Using a room sheet as paratextual support, Lowry offers the viewer a map of the United States, a definition of the United States, and an appropriated “cultural projection (nation) over found geological formations and Indigenous nations” complete with material measurements and sale price (based on current US GDP).

Gallery Talk: Art and the Limits of Specificity

This presentation will trace a conceptually driven artistic practice that employs strategies of concealed quotation designed to operate at the limits of recognition and specificity (www.seanlowry.com). After discussing exhibited outcomes ranging from overpainted wall paintings to dematerialized art and subliminally inflected pop music, this presentation will explore aesthetics after conceptualism, artistic production after postmodernism, and the evolution of peer reviewed project space for art at the outermost limits of location-specificity (projectanywhere.net).
