This event is presented by The National Consortium for Creative Placemaking & ArtPlace America, and hosted by UMD School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation and the National Center for Smart Growth.

CREATIVE PLACEMAKING AND CHANGE

Communities around the Washington, D.C. region are experiencing rapid changes that intersect with concerns for arts and cultural programming. This conference will discuss the ramifications of issues, such as gentrification, environmental instability, and the loss of cultural and historic assets to the region with the aim of developing creative solutions and strong community leadership through an engagement with the arts and design.

Interactive sessions will provide attendees with strategies to bring back to their own communities. Topics include artists and designers as change agents, public/private partnerships, grassroots change, placekeeping, zoning and policy, and advancing equity, social and environmental justice. Those interested in public policy, neighborhood change, urban and environmental planning, and social equity as advanced through Creative Placemaking are encouraged to register.

There are three FREE workshops available to registrants on the first day:

  • Creative Placemaking 101

  • Leveraging the Tools of Creative Placemaking

  • Creative Placemaking Values in Practice

The 2018 National Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit is offering pre-registered workshops throughout the three-day convening.

The Pre-Summit Institute (Friday Oct 5, 10am-11:45am) has been designed to energize and inspire creative placemakers of all experience levels. From beginners to experts, everyone can participate and engage in one of the three workshops offered to kick off the three-day national summit.

The Community Day Workshops (Sunday Oct 7, 10am-12pm or 1pm) offer a unique opportunity to experience extensive community-centered workshops, explore neighboring communities, learn from their past experiences, and engage in a hands-on charrette to develop short- and long-term strategies in the future. Note: All Sunday attendees must pre-register for one of the five workshops offered.
