In the age of digital revolution where things are increasingly accessible and easier to procure by the untrained we see a growing tension between those who have dedicated their entire lives to perfecting a relatively narrow field and those who wish to empower untrained to quickly engage in and experience the exhilarating nature of that same field with a help of technology. Perhaps this tension is driven by the fear of obsolescence, or at the very least devaluing of a profession through a market saturation, despite the fact that neither are the conscious impetus of those who wish to broaden the access. In the lecture on March 9th I will share a personal story that treads on both sides of this fence, most recently focusing on community engagement and empowerment through technology with projects like Linux Laptop Orchestra and its K12 outreach via various Maker initiatives, as well as the Cloud communal installation.
