Kibel Gallery Talk: Red Vienna's Housing Program: Practical Lessons and Living Legacy
by Isabelle Gournay
Isabelle Gournay, (Emerita, University of Maryland), an architectural historian with expertise in the fields of architecture, community planning and affordable housing will talk about the pros and cons of the policies that informed the 1920s housing program in Red Vienna. Discussion will focus on the design assets and liabilities of the social housing program and the ways in which policy and design impacted subsequent housing projects in Vienna. She will also discuss how projects like the Karl Marx Hof have withstood the test of time and been rehabilitated and see a comparison with housing in lower-density Greenbelt, Maryland.
Discussion will also include the following topics from Eve Blau's book, The Architecture of Red Vienna, 1919-1934: “The Historical City: Patterns of Growth and Urban Life”; “Learning to Live, 1919-1923”; “Vienna Builds on Itself; Conceptualizing the Socialist City”; and Building and City: The Politics of the Plan”.
Geared to all who are interested in architecture, planning, preservation and real estate development.
