Biography
Born in Mexico City, Dr. De Anda holds a B.A. from the National School of Architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM), an M.A. and a Ph.D. in History of Art by the School of Philosophy and Literature, also at UNAM. He is a Researcher in the area of Modern Art at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies at UNAM, as well as a Professor at the Schools of Architecture, and Philosophy and Literature at UNAM. He is a “D” type beneficiary of the Program of Bonuses for the Performance of Full-time Faculty of the UNAM (PRIDE D), and a National Researcher, of the Mexican System of Researchers.
He is the author of 12 books and co-author of 24 other on the History of Art and Architecture in which different authors contribute specific chapters. 12 books have been published as a result of collective projects he has directed. He has taught and lectured at universities and academic centers throughout Mexico, Latin America, The United States, Europe and Australia. He founded the "National Forum of History and Criticism of Architecture” (Foro Nacional de Historia y Crítica de la Arquitectura), an event that has been held every year since 2003 in coordination with Mexican universities. He has directed 13 graduation papers for B.A.s, M.A.s and Ph.D.s. in the History of Art. He has received the following awards and honors —among others—: in 2019 The Gold Medal by the Mexico City Legislature, in the field of “Cultural Heritage Preservation” ; in 2015 the “National University Award”, in 2007 he won the National Anthropology and History Institute (INAH) "Manuel Gamio Award” for the coordination of the Management Plan for the Historic Center of the City of Oaxaca; and in the same year —both, the College and the Society of Mexican Architects— awarded him the "Juan O' Gorman” prize for his trajectory in the research and dissemination of Mexican Architecture. In 2004 the Federation of Architects of Mexico conferred him the "Ricardo Robina Award” for his contribution to the dissemination of Mexican Architecture; and in 2003, the UNAM awarded him the "Alfonso Caso Medal” for the best Ph.D. History of Art thesis. In 1995, he was a recipient of the “Getty Grant Foundation" scholarship; in 1993 of the “Rockefeller –Bancomer Foundation" scholarship; and in 1989, he won the INAH "Manuel Toussaint Award" for the best M.A. thesis.
Within the sector of the preservation of cultural heritage, he is the author of the initiative and the files for the Campus of the University City of the UNAM to be included in the World Heritage List. He has done de desk review for the dossiers: Pampulhia, Bello Horizonte, Brasil (2015), and Fagus Factory, 1911 (2010), 2015. He is Coordinator of the "Scientific Committee on Architecture of the Twentieth Century of Mexican ICOMOS, AC”.
He has been coordinator and curator of exhibitions specialized in Architecture and Applied Arts of the twentieth century with installations at the National Art Museum and the Franz Mayer Museum of Mexico City. He has been a member of academic juries and various university commissions. He is an Honorific Academic Member of the National Academy of Architecture of Mexico.
