This past winter, UMD's historic preservation program began a two-year project for the National Park Service (NPS) to document conditions of historic structures on the 44-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland, including stretches that have never been documented by the NPS or anyone else. Armed with sturdy boots and full backpacks, UMD student Katie Boyle, a dual-degree graduate student in applied anthropology/historic preservation, and Interim Director of Historic Preservation Dennis Pogue use new technology, time-tested survey skills and keen eyes, to identify previously undiscovered archaeological sites and help preserve one of the United States’ greatest natural treasures.
