MAPP’s American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS UMD) is joining forces with AIA Potomac Valley to compete in the 2018 Canstruction competition, “CAN't Stop the Beet!.”

Canstruction is a nationwide program that aims to raise awareness about hunger. Its teams of volunteers participate in events in 150+ cities around the world each year.

In the Washington, D.C. area, Canstruction is organized by the Washington Architectural Foundation and the Capital Area Food Bank, and the result is a creative design-build competition where teams use their skills to build sculptures out of cans of food. At the end of the week, the nutritious, shelf-stable food is donated to the Capital Area Food Bank for distribution to those in need.

The Build Out takes place on Sunday, November 18th at the National Building Museum and the results will be on view from Monday, November 19 through Sunday, November 25, 2018.

The team’s goal is to raise as much in funding as they can for the cause. You may visit the donation website here: https://giving.capitalareafoodbank.org/story/L1ryze

In 2017, the nature-themed sculptures collected a total of 73,169 pounds of food plus $8,191 in “votes” for the Capital Area Food Bank. That's over 75,000 meals!

Canstruction® is a non-profit 501(c)3 charity that hosts competitions and events where awe-inspiring, gigantic structures are created entirely out of full cans of food. Afterwards, all food is donated to local food banks. Since 1992, Canstruction has raised over 72 million pounds of food for hunger relief organizations around the world.
