Sasha Kahn, a senior candidate for a double degree in Architecture and Government & Politics, has been named a 2019 Phillip Merrill Presidential Scholar. The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program honors the University of Maryland’s most successful seniors and their designated university faculty and K-12 teachers for their mentorship. Kahn was one of 19 seniors selected campus-wide for the program, considered the most prestigious and competitive undergraduate achievement at the University of Maryland. Kahn was honored by President Wallace Loh at the annual scholars luncheon on November 15, 2019.
Kahn credits his high school mentor Stephen Miller and UMD faculty mentor Michael Spivey for stoking his passion for law and government, while encouraging him to pursue an interest in architecture. “My mentors have clarified for me the importance of education and forming my own opinions, making me a more thoughtful, eloquent and compassionate person,” said Kahn in his personal statement. Kahn has been an active and effective member of the university’s Student Government Association since his freshman year, adding a string of leadership positions during his time at UMD. Among his many achievements, he was instrumental in passing legislation requiring the university to maintain accessible routes and sidewalks during campus construction.
“During his time at Maryland, Sasha has exemplified what it means to be an engaged citizen of this campus,” said Interim Dean Donald Linebaugh. “We are enormously proud of him and his achievement.”
