2010 - Silver Spring Market Study 2010
A Subregional Analysis

The time is right for an indepth look at Silver Spring, Maryland. According to the Montgomery County Sector Plan for the Silver Spring Central Business District (CBD), no other CBD in the County is as large, has experienced the same magnitude of decline, or seen as dramatic a shift in demographics as Silver Spring. The Silver Spring CBD Sector Plan was approved and adopted in February 2000. At that time, the plan indicated that there were approximately 55,000 households within the Silver Spring market area, with an aggregate annual income of over $3 billion and estimated retail spending of about $660 million that could support approximately 1.9 million square feet of retail space. Ten years on, the redevelopment carried out in early 2000’s has now had some time to settle in and mature somewhat, and this, together with the other factors that have made Silver Spring’s history unique, make this an ideal time to review the CBD’s current market for retail. By doing so, the public and private sectors will be able to better focus their limited resources and ensure continued success in this Washington D.C. suburb where there is high regional competition for consumer dollars.
