What's in a Number? An Examination of the National Register's 50 Year Rule

Preservationists and urban planners are questioning if 50 years is enough time for a
structure to gain significance. They are questioning if the 50-year rule should be
lengthened or shortened. Some are asking if it makes sense to implement an age
requirement that was determined arbitrarily. This paper is an investigation into the 50-
year rule; its origin, purpose, and practicality.
