2006 - Maintaining the Link between Business and Community: Hampden's Retail Environment

The Spring 2006 Community Planning Studio focused on Hampden, a Baltimore neighborhood in trasition. Younger, wealthier, better-educated residents are moving in, developers are turning vacant lots and old industrial and institutional buildings into housing, property values are rising dramaticlally, and older residents are being forced out of their homes. The Hampden Community Council, with support from the Baltimore City Department of Planning, has hired a private consultant, Strategic Management Consulting, to facilitate a series of community meetings leading to the creation of a strategic plan for Hampden. The Spring Studio became an intregal part of the process by focusing on the main commercial street and how it can meet the changing and different demands of the area.
