Changing Majors

Each semester students switch in and out of majors in the academic units on campus.  Should you decide that Architecture is no longer the major you would like to pursue, or find yourself needing to switch majors after the Review Process, below are helpful tips for making that transition as easy as possible.

Deciding on a New Major

There are many resources on campus that can assist you with finding a major that is right for you.  The Career Center, the Counseling Center and the Letters and Sciences are great places to start.

The Career Center offers some preliminary information on choosing a major. You can also make an appointment with a counselor for more specific information.  The Counseling Center also offers assistance through career counseling.  Letters & Sciences is for undergraduates not enrolled in a degree-granting major.  It is dedicated to providing the best possible advising to its students and offers extensive and consistent advising, especially in relation to general education opportunities and requirements, aid students who are unable to participate in a limited enrollment program with the examination of new areas of study and assists students to explore actively all of the majors and opportunities here at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Changing to a Non-LEP Major

If you wish to process a major change go to the college associated with your new desired major to obtain approval, advisement information and to process the change.  Visit the www.advising.umd.edu for more details on specific requirements.

Changing to a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) Major

Students contemplating a change in major to Business & Management, Engineering, Government and Politics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture or Psychology should contact the academic unit directly for information on specific procedures and requirements for admissions or visiting the Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) website.  In addition, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions can provide an up-to-date list of special admissions requirements for these majors.  Students considering majoring in Education should contact the College of Education.   Students with fewer than 45 credits not admitted directly into these programs may be admitted to the Letters and Sciences by going to the Undergraduate Advising Center and indicating a desire to do so.
