Welcome

Welcome to this site! As the Director of the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development and the newest program in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, I can truly say you would be hard pressed to find a more energizing and instructive location for studying real estate development. As part of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, an education in real estate development is a lively and enlivening experience at the University of Maryland.

Hopefully the information you find here will be helpful to you in discovering what our program is about and how it might be a match for you. I encourage you to not only scroll through the information here, but to give me a call or an email "shout" to discuss how our programs might be a good match with your aspirations. My direct phone number is 301-405-6790 and email is mmcf@umd.edu.

Real Estate Development is a cross-cutting and ever changing field of endeavor. The places we live, work and play shape us and of course we shape them. If you find yourself curious about how buildings get built, why the City, the beach community or the suburbs look the way they do (or you wish it did), if you have an enthusiasm for making your part of the world more livable, more people-friendly, more sustainable and green you have passed the first "test." If you have a tolerance for the inherent risk in real estate dealings and a healthy dose of persistence, then you bring some personal characteristics that will enhance your career. We would be pleased to be your guide to knowledge, both theoretical and applied, both academic and professional, in your preparation to compete most effectively in the real estate development arena.

There are currently 80 students enrolled in the MRED and Certificate real estate development programs. The Master's Programs, both the regular non-cohort program, and the federal cohort program, is open for applications.
