John Kirkland

A lifelong learner and entrepreneur, John has spent the last 40 years in the real estate and contracting industries. After excelling in residential sales during the recession of the late 1970s, he went on to work in the commercial brokerage, appraisal, consulting, and development sectors of the real estate industry. Recently he provided development project management for Capitol Gateway Estates, the $110 million mixed- use, public/private partnership adjacent to the Capitol Heights Metro station.  John has taught over 50 real estate, construction management, and business courses. In addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees in real estate, John has completed professional development coursework in various real estate topics including project management, appraisal, brownfield redevelopment, tax credit financing, marketing, brokerage, and historic preservation. He holds certifications in Construction Safety, Project Management, and as a LEED-AP. John is active in the U.S. Green Building Council NCR, Johns Hopkins University Real Estate Forum, NAIOP, and DCBIA.
